Qualifications

All Notaries must be 18 years of age or older.  A Notary is elected to a four-year term by the county legislative body in the county where he/she resides or has a principal place of business. A Notary is commissioned by the governor. A Notary Public is empowered to administer oaths, take depositions, and take affidavits. All Notaries are at large, meaning that they can exercise the functions of a Notary Public in all counties in Tennessee.

2 Step Process for New Notaries and Renewals:

Step 1 Apply

There are a few different ways you can apply.

1. Online by clicking HERE. Select Wilson > Notary Application
2. By printing and completing the Notary Application, then mailing to our South College St. location with your $12 payment.
3. By printing and completing the Notary Application, then placing it in the dropbox at our South College St. location with your $12 payment.
4. In-person at our South College St. location by appointment only.

If mailing or leaving in the dropbox, please attach a $12 check made payable to the Wilson County Clerk’s Office. In-person, you can pay with cash, card, or check.

Applications must be submitted to our office by noon on the 3rd Monday of each month. Applications submitted after noon on the 3rd Monday will be placed on the approval list for the following month. 

Step 2 Bond/Commission Pick up/Swear In (Appointment Needed)

Approximately a week after the county commission meets you can check the status under the “Quick Links” section on this page or call our office the first week of the following month to check notary status.

After it’s posted by the TN Secretary of State it takes approximately a week for us to receive your commission in the mail. Call and check with our office to see if we have your commission before you make an appointment to pick it up.

*At this appointment, you will be sworn in for your new term and you will need to bring your notary bond with you for us to keep on file.
